I am delighted to be a part of this wonderful school family that is rich in history. Compton Elementary School was first named after James W. Lathrop who was called the &ldquo;Father of the Public School System in Ohio, &ldquo; and then the name was changed to Compton to honor Paralee Watkins Compton. Mrs. Compton served in many leadership and administrative roles with the Canton City Schools. Mrs. Compton was the first female and the first African American to serve as the Assistant Superintendent of Canton City Schools.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The staff members at Compton are second to none. Because of the hard work and dedication of the staff and students at Compton, our school has a designation of continuous improvement and we met adequate yearly progress (AYP). Our AYP status is due to our March 2006 Ohio Achievement scores. Compton was also named a school of choice. Our theme this year is that, &ldquo;we&rsquo;re simply the best, because we strive to be better than all the rest.&rdquo;</p> <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Compton&rsquo;s goal is to be on the cutting edge of quality educational innovation, in order to produce high achievement and the best program for our students. The curriculum, based on state academic content standards, was developed with the philosophy that all students can learn and deserve equal access to a quality education.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Every morning the students at Compton recite the ABC&rsquo;s of knowledge pledge, which says, <u>&nbsp;&ldquo;A is for attitude, B is for belief, C is for confidence, and D is for dedication, determination and discipline all necessary for success.
